Hello and Welcome to Year 5!
I hope you’ve all enjoy the start of Year 5 and have had a lovely break with family and friends. However, I hope you all looking forward to learning some new and exciting things in Autumn 2!
I can’t quite believe we are already on the countdown to Christmas!!
We had a marvellous start to Year 5 in Autumn 1 learning about:
· The Stone Age
· The Bronze Age
· The Iron Age
Have a look at how much fun we had in the pictures below.
In English we will be reading the book ‘Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg’, which links to our topic ‘WHAT ON EARTH!’. Mathematics In Mathematics we will be focusing on:
Every child will take part in a guided reading session weekly with Miss Jackson and a comprehension task weekly with Mrs Pursglove. Miss Dennis will be reading with children first thing in a morning with those who bring their reading book and reading record into school.
Everyone will have the opportunity to choose a book from the library on a Friday afternoon. The library is also available during break and lunch times for children who need to change their book.
This term we will be learning all about forces and how forces link to our topic.
In Autumn 2, our topic is called ‘WHAT ON EARTH!’ During our topic lessons, we will be learning about space and forces.
In RE we will be starting our learning journey about Christianity, but also begin to learn about Buddhism.
Every week children take part in one PE lesson. Our PE sessions take place on a Thursday afternoon. We strongly advise that all children bring both their indoor and outdoor PE kit on a Monday morning and take it home on a Friday for washing.
Start date: Tuesday 11th September 2017
End date: Tuesday 6th February 2018
Swimming is part of the Year 5 National Curriculum, therefore children most take part in these sessions. The sessions will last approximately one hour at the Thorne Leisure Centre, where they will be learning a variety of swimming techniques, including lifesaving. When this happens, the children may be asked to bring pyjamas and light or heaving clothing. Every Tuesday the
children must bring their swimming attire with them. Children who are asthmatic, must also bring their inhaler!
The children will be given new spellings every Thursday. These spellings will be tested the following Wednesday. It is important that the children practise their spellings, so they can use them in their writing. Children need to make sure their homework book is back in school on a Tuesday to ensure it is marked and checked.
We recommend that all children have a water bottle in school every day, so that they can keep hydrated throughout the day. We have a designated area in the classroom where we keep our water bottles and can fill them up at the water fountain in our shared area, at appropriate times. You can purchase a school water bottle from the office or use an alternative bottle. It would be really useful if you can make sure that your child's full name is on the bottle, in case we have more than one of the same bottle.
Fruit for break time
We would also like to remind you that the children are more than welcome to bring their own fruit for break time. However we must stress that they can only bring fruit, as we are a healthy school.
