Welcome to Year 5! We are all set for an exciting year, full of interesting learning opportunities and growth.
Our first topic is Behind Enemy Lines investigating, researching and exploring what life was like during WW1 and WW2. We will especially consider what life was like for children during those troubled and dangerous times…
As readers, we will be researching factual texts; finding out about important social and historical changes from a range of media; and, get well and truly stuck into our class novel – ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian.
As writers, we will produce emotive letters; write diary entries; and, create reports/information texts/fact files.
As mathematicians, we will be investigating place value; expand our knowledge, understanding and use of strategies with addition and subtraction; and, develop our understanding and use of tables, graphs, timetables and charts.
As scientists, we will investigate light, considering how we see the world around us, and aim to improve our investigative skills, planning, carrying out and evaluating a number of experiments.
As historians, we will investigate WW1 and WW2, exploring what life was like during these extraordinary times, and what major changes occurred, some of which still impact British life to this day.
As geographers, we will investigate the exploration during the Tudor times, as we explored the New World...
As amateur sports people, we will be developing a variety of skills through team games/invasion games.
As users of I.C.T., we will develop our use of coding, and re-focus on the vital issues around e-safety.
As artists, we will develop our use of line and shading, and consider the use of colour to create dramatic effects.
As responsible citizens, we will consider how we keep safe within our lives
As we enter the Autumn Term, please ensure that the children all have their outdoor P.E. kits, and have water bottles in school that they can take out for those sessions. Please also ensure that the children have appropriate coats for the colder weather, especially given that we will walk to/from Thorne Leisure Centre for our swimming sessions, every Monday morning.
As always, please feel free to contact us should you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your support.
Mr. Thomas and Ms Jackson
